LuLaRoe Copycats: My Pattern Picks

LuLaRoe has become a giant phenomenon, and I have friends and family that are huge fans, but for the most part I’ve looked at what they offer and thought “Man, I’m glad I can sew.”  Mostly because I often score RAD deals on knits and can actually save money sewing my own.

That said, I’ll admit I do own some pieces.  I’m definitely not begrudging the consultants that sell LLR; sewing is not for everyone.  Even as someone who does make her own clothes, sometimes there’s only time to buy ready to wear instead of DIYing.

That said, the beauty of sewing is you can make exactly what you want exactly how you want.  You can get the exact fit, fabrication, and colors or prints that YOU love (well, the latter if you can find ’em). And prints really are LLR’s shtick; the garments themselves are all quite simple.

Basically, I keep seeing sewing patterns and repeatedly thinking “That’s LLR *insert name here*!” so I thought it would be fun to share my pattern and fabric suggestions for some popular garments they offer.  Imitation is the purest form of flattery, amirite?

These are by no means the only options, but just the first or best (IMO) ones that have come to my mind.  In no particular order… Continue reading “LuLaRoe Copycats: My Pattern Picks”

April Ruminations, May Plans

Been a bit of a quiet blogging month, but since I actually set some goals for once, thought it would be nice to follow up!  To recap, here’s what I was hoping to accomplish in April:

  • Sewaholic Minoru
  • 2 Oliver + S Bucket Hats for Cheeks
  • Jalie Cora running tights
  • McCall’s 6873 for Cheeks
  • Simplicity 8291
  • Unblogged plan:  Blue Calla Iris for my mom’s birthday gift

While writing that post, these didn’t seem like THAT much work, but looking at it now:  bahaha…like I was going to get all of that done.

So, how many did I finish?

Me Made May ’17!

I haven’t participated in Me Made May since 2013, and decided it was time to give it another go!  Here’s my pledge:

I, Jess of The Sometimes Sewist (@sometimessewist on IG), sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’17. I endeavor to wear one handmade item each day for the duration of May 2017.

Because it can get pretty boring to see random outfits on a daily (or even weekly) basis, I’ll be posting my Me Mades daily on Instagram instead of here.

Bet you’re wondering:  Why so long in between Me Made Mays?  Here’s what was happening in the interim years:

Easter Best

Momentum is a funny thing; sometimes you’re on a roll and then…BAM!  Stopped.  Stuck in the mud.  Or your head.  Or whatever.  I swear I posted a week or two ago last, but it has been almost THREE!  Such a lollygagger.  I haven’t gotten a ton of sewing done in that time, but I still have many garments to photograph and blog from February and March plus some oldies for Throwback Thursday.

That said, life has been a little busy, and I’ll use that as my excuse.  We’re currently looking for a bigger home and readying our own house for sale.  The real estate market here (and many places, per the many nationwide articles I’ve read) is pretty much insane at the moment:  so little inventory, such high prices, very much a seller’s market.  It’ll bode well when it comes time for us to sell our sweet little starter home, but this end is just a tad frustrating.  We’ve been looking since late February and we are persisting because quickly selling our home is very attractive with a toddler around.

Speaking of a toddlers, I managed to make Cheeks some stuff for Easter.  :D  All three pieces are part of McCall’s 6873.
