Woohoo, ya’ll! I’ve got another skirt done. OK, I got it done last week, but it’s still pretty neat:
Say hello to my little friend, style number 105 from BurdaStyle magazine’s February 2014 issue. Or 02/2014 #105 for short. Does it look a bit nautical to you, or is that just me?
I made this plaid version of it this Winter and never blogged about it.
I feel really badly for not blogging it, because I WON the fabric from a wonderful home dec store in town, Creative Energy Designs (Thanks to them again!). Plus, look at that plaid matchin’. It was pretty much my favorite skirt this Winter (wool!) but it was a bit tight to begin with (AKA fine in the morning but a little dicey to wear after lunch) and now is even tighter. Must start running/kettle bell/hiking again more frequently. Le sigh.
Anyway, back to this skirt. The Mini Wardrobe skirt #2. Beware; sassy photos ahead.
I made this bad boy out of a Marc Jacobs cotton broadcloth from FabricMart and lined it with silk/cotton “Elegance” from Martha Pullen. The only changes I made were to add a bit to the side seams and waistband so this version would fit properly and to shorten it 2.5″ (or maybe it was 3″).
The wind does blah things to this skirt.
A note on sizing: BurdaStyle magazine does a really good job of making patterns that actually fit the size of person that matches their size chart, unlike many Big 4 patterns. Since this is a close fitting design, I would go up a size if you’re between sizes and adjust down later if need be.
I am particularly proud of my invisible zip install on this garment. I’m not sure if I’m getting better at it or if this was just particularly cooperative fabric. Whatever it is, I’ll take it.
I finally found a use for this button, too. I’m fairly certain I used the other one my Junior year of college on a pair of jeans I designed. That was 10 years ago; maybe a bit more.
There’s really a lot of hand sewing on this skirt: waistband, lower edge of lining, and hem. I could have cut some corners, but I’m getting to a place where I’d rather spend the extra time to have a garment that will wear well.
I even used hug snug rayon binding on the side seams.
So yeah, that’s the second skirt of my mini wardrobe! THREE more garments and one week to go. So much for that schedule I made.
ETA: My sister just told me this photo makes me look like a squirrel climbing a tree. LMAO.
Both skirts look great! The stripes look a bit nautical…but I don’t think they’ll overwhelm an outfit. you’re making good progress on the mini-wardrobe!
Thanks, Carrie! :)
What an inspired fabric choice for this pattern–you’ve got a great-looking skirt here! Good luck with the rest of your wardrobe!
That’s sweet of you to say, Mads. Thank you!
Great skirt! I really loved the plaid one when you posted a pic on the Fabric Fast thread and this striped version is fantastic as well! :D
Thank you, ‘moon! This skirt really makes me want to make that rockin’ shirt you whipped up for your Mini Wardrobe even more…they’d be so cute together!
I was wondering if you shortened the yoke? I’m 5’1″ and am planning to make a knee length version of this. Looks very Kate Spade inspired.😀
Nope, I just shortened the bottom part of the skirt! Even at your height, I don’t think I would shorten the yoke since the center front is quite petite as is (3 5/8″) and it would mess with the proportions.
Thanks for your analysis, I hope you enjoy your summery mini-wardrobe
This fabric and pattern were a match made in heaven! Great job, the stripe matching is excellent.
Thanks, Helena. The moment I saw this fabric I knew it had to be this skirt.
Fabulous skirts. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you! :)
This skirt is fabulous! I love it! Both of your versions are great.
Thank you so much! :)
